Let’s explore who these “between” people might be. Take military veterans. After serving for a few years, many go into a wide variety of different roles. My hunch is that they are contenders. As a former Royal Marine myself, I’m nominating several of my “oppos”.
Another great example is cabin crew members. They really do see the world from 30,000ft. And in dealing with a wide variety of people from many countries, cultures, professions, statuses and ages, they could be betweenest of all.
These individuals are often the quiet, influential people who defy the stereotypes and are rarely in the spotlight, but they have an incredible ability to create connections across industries, cultures, and experiences.
